Also known as "The Gentle Art" Jiu Jitsu uses takedowns, sweeps, positional control, and escapes for self-defense. Because of this, striking is not necessary with this artform. Eventually submissions (Shoulder Locks, Arm Bars) are introduced, but not until the student fully understands the positions and shows responsibility and caution when applying said submission.
Formally known as "Te" (Hand) in Okinawa, it would later evolve to "Karate" (Empty Hand) when the artform became adopted by the Japanese. The style of Karate offered at Martial Arts in Hardwick is Goju-Ryu (The Hard-Soft Style) Not only does it incorporate striking, but also includes grabs, joint locks, take downs, and Okinawan Wrestling.
